6-story Jesus statue in Ohio struck by lightning

MONROE, Ohio – A six-story statue of Jesus Christ was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, leaving only a blackened steel skeleton and pieces of foam that were scooped up by curious onlookers Tuesday.

The “King of Kings” statue, one of southwest Ohio’s most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11:15 p.m. Monday, Monroe police dispatchers said.

The sculpture, about 62 feet tall and 40 feet wide at the base, showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesusbecause of the way the arms were raised, similar to a referee signaling a touchdown. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained Tuesday.

The nickname is the same used for a famous mural of the resurrected Jesus that overlooks the Notre Dame football stadium.

The fire spread from the statue to an adjacent amphitheater but was confined to the attic area, and no one was injured, police Chief Mark Neu said.

Estimated damage from the fire was set at $700,000 — $300,000 for the statue and $400,000 for the amphitheater, Fire Capt. Richard Mascarella said Tuesday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was at the scene Tuesday to prevent traffic jams and potential accidents from motorists stopping along the highway to take photographs.

The patrol began issuing citations about 4 p.m. Tuesday to motorists for stopping on the side of the highway, dispatcher Adam Brown said. The number of gawkers coupled with construction had slowed I-75 traffic in the area to a crawl, the state Highway Patrol said.

Some people were scooping up pieces of the statue’s foam from the nearby pond to take home with them, said church co-pastor Darlene Bishop.

“This meant a lot to a lot of people,” she said.

Keith Lewis, of nearby Middletown, arrived at the church around 7 a.m. Tuesday to photograph the remains for his wife. Lewis said he had viewed the statue as both an oddity and an inspiration.

Cassie Browning, a church member from Dayton, said she was driving home when she saw smoke and noticed the statue was missing.

Travelers on I-75 often were startled to come upon the huge statue by the roadside, but many said America needs more symbols like it. So many people stopped at the church campus that church officials had to build a walkway to accommodate them.

Bishop said the statue will be rebuilt.

“It will be back, but this time we are going to try for something fireproof,” she said.

The 4,000-member, nondenominational church was founded by Bishop and her husband, former horse trader Lawrence Bishop.

Lawrence Bishop said in 2004 he was trying to help people, not impress them, with the statue. He said his wife proposed the Jesus figure as a beacon of hope and salvation.

Commentary:

Think, O Christian, may Allah guide you to the straight path, if you consider Jesus Christ to be God, then why would he destroy his own statue?

Would he not be proud of those who built it?

Would he not marvel over it?

And those who consider Jesus to be the son of God, think…

If he is the son of God, would He (God) not feel proud of a statue built for his son?

If God was pleased with the concept that you cling to so dearly (Jesus being the son of God), then why would He destroy an icon that calls to that message?

Ponder over this…

This is a message for all idol-worshippers and not just Christians. There are many Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and others who worship huge statues which sooner or later crumble to pieces.

Worship THE CREATOR and not HIS creation!

Good point Sajid. That was the message of all the Prophets from Noah to Muhammad (peace be upon them all); to worship the Creator and not one of the Creation.

How can we worship the one who was in need of food and drink when he was in the belly of his noble mother, Mary (pronounced Maryam in Islam) and even after birth did all of the actions that me and yourself do everyday.

Far removed is Allah (the only true deity worthy of being worshipped) from all these claims and imperfections.

Allah is the One who is Perfect in all aspects, in His Lordship, in His maintaining and sustaining the Universe and all of His creation within it and in His Lofty Names and Attributes.

For He alone is the One who can give life and death, and can remove sickness and disease (taking the means to the cure is necessary and the cure is dependent on whether Allah puts the cure in that means or does not).

So let us worship the One True God (Allah) and remove ourselves from worshipping any of the creation, for they are just that, His creation and they do not deserve any worship whatsoever.

Sahih Muslim Book 25. On General Behavior
Chapter : It is forbidden to call the ruler as the king of kings or Shahanshah.

Abu Huraira reported from Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) so many ahadith and one of them was this that Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The most wretched person in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection and the worst person and target of His wrath would of the person who is called Malik al-Amlak (the King of Kings) for there is no king but Allah.

That was also the name of the statue destoryed. La huwla wala quuwata illa billa

Yesterday I listened to an amazing khutbah by Br. Aboo Khadeejah hafidhahullah. The link to the free audio is http://salaficentre.co.uk/audio/abu_khadeejah/Abu_Khadeejah_Kutbah_Salafi_Centre.wma

During the course of the Khutbah, one of the things he mentioned was that according to some Scholars of Tafseer, the stones that are mentioned in the following verse are the asnaam (idols that are worshipped instead of directly worshipping Allaah).

    يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواقُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ
“O you who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones,…”(At-Tahrim (66):6)

I checked in both Tafseer ibn Kathir (qtafsir.com) & Tafseer Jalalayn (quran.com) and this meaning is given in them. Further in Tafseer ibn Kathir the proof that is given is the verse

    إِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنتُمْ لَهَا وَارِدُونَ
“Certainly! You (disbelievers) and that which you are worshipping now besides Allah, are (but) fuel for Hell! (Surely), you will enter it.” (Al-Anbiyaa 21:98)

May Allaah protect us from the Hell-Fire, the Torment in the Grave and the trials of this life. Aameen.

I can’t seem to get over this article, subhaanAllaah. I also found this following comment amusing, “It will be back, but this time we are going to try for something fireproof,” she said.

Ofcourse, why not…until a meteor decides to fall from the sky….

Reminds me of the hadeeth, ‘…whatever is meant to be in your lot will NOT pass you by…’ Whatever they do, they just cannot be successful. For they plan and Allaah plans. But, He is the best of planners!

“For they plan and Allaah plans. But, He is the best of planners!”

The actual verse says; “they PLOT and PLAN, and Allaah is the best of PLANNERS”

As plotting is done when one intends an evil act, and plan is done when one intends a good act…

So they PLOt (an evil act) and plan (an act), and Allaah is the best of PLANNERS (a good act- as Allaah doesnt plot as that necessitates attributing evilness to Allaah Most high)
