Remaining Firm upon Good while others are upon Evil

Enjoining The Good & Forbidding The Evil At Home

Question to Shaykh Bin Baaz: I am young woman who lives in the dormitory with other female students. Allaah has guided me to the truth and I am sticking to my religion, and all praises are due to Allaah. However, what I see around me from my fellow students disturbs me very much. Fatawa
I see them committing sins and evil, like listening to music, backbiting and spreading tales. I have advised them often, but some of them ridicule me and some insult me. They say that I am causing trouble. Dear Shaykh, I hope you will help me. What should I do? May Allaah reward you.

Answer:
It is obligatory upon you to repel evil to the best of your ability, with good words, kindness and a good approach. You should use the ayaat of the Qur’aan and narrate ahadeeth according to your level of knowledge. You should not join them in listening to songs, and other forbidden words or actions.

Separate yourself from them as much as possible until they engage in some other activity. This is what Allaah has Stated:

And when you see those who engage in (offensive) discourse concerning Our aayaat, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.1

When you have rebuked them with your speech according to the best of your ability and remained away from what they have done, then their deeds will not harm you in the least, nor will their disapproval of you. Allaah has Stated:

O you who have believed, upon you is (responsibility for) yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. To Allaah is your return all together; then He will inform you of what you used to do.2

Allaah has made it clear that a believer is not harmed by those who stray as long as he sticks to the truth and remains steadfast upon guidance.

This should be done by eradicating evil and remaining firm upon the truth along with calling others to that path in a good way. Allaah will then make for the person an escape and refuge. Insha-Allaah, Allaah will benefit them by your guidance, if you are patient, and hope for reward from Allaah. Have the glad tidings of a great deal of good, and a praiseworthy end, as long as you stick to the truth, and reject what opposes it. As Allaah has Said:

And the best outcome is for the righteous.3

Allaah Says:

And those who strive for Us, We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allaah is with the doers of good.4

May Allaah grace you with what is pleasing to Him and grant you patience and steadfastness. May Allaah bless your sisters, families and companions with that which is beloved and pleasing to Him. He hears and is close. He is the guide to the straight Path.
